Age Requirements
Our minimum age requirement is eight years of age. We have in the past worked with children as young as five, however, this has proven to be excessively burdensome on the child as well as the parents. NOTE: It generally takes us 12 to 18 months from the time of application to placement of an assistance dog. If you child is 6 ½ years of age or older it is a good idea to begin the application process now. By the time the child turns eight we would be prepared to initiate placement with one of our wonderful working assistance dogs.

We receive an incredible number of inquiries regarding placement of dogs with infants and toddlers. These inquiries are largely specific to Seizure Response Dogs. At this time, an assistance dog for a child so young is simply not feasible. However, we continue to look at this issue and study it. We are hopeful that someday we will be able to assist those children and their parents.

We very much understand the incredible challenges faced by parents who have children with disabilities. Please be assured that the age requirement is not arbitrary. It is simply a matter of the child not having the cognitive function and maturity to develop a healthy working relationship with the trained assistance dog. Many envision "Lassie" tirelessly and faithfully watching over a young child. The reality is that childcare is extremely boring for the task oriented working dog.

Should any breakthroughs be made in the area of age, they will be posted to this section of our web site. If you have further question regarding age, please contact us directly by email or phone.

Other Requirements
All other requirements are outlined in the pre application and information packet. To request a packet or for more information, please contact us by phone or email

Application Review Process
SDA receives applications year round, and screens them within 60 days of receipt. We send a letter indicating whether the application is complete or incomplete after the initial screening. If the application is incomplete, the applicant will have 30 days to send any additional information or paperwork. If not complete within 90 days of initial receipt, the application will be denied. Applicants with complete applications will receive an "approved" or "denied" letter within 90 days after we receive your application. Approved applicants will be informed of the year of their placement at this time, and will be informed of the exact date of placement no less than 120 days prior to that date. Denied applicants will receive a brief statement summarizing the reason for denial. If you have received a letter indicating that your application was complete, and have not received an "approved" or "denied" letter within 30 days thereafter, you may request the status of
your application via email.
